Site Update — 25 February 2011
Welcome to the New OfficeSupplyGeek
Notes on the New OSG Layout

Notes on the New OSG Layout- Click to Enlarge

First, my apologies to anyone who was trying to access the site yesterday while it was down for a while.  Things took a bit longer than I had expected, and I still have some minor kinks, adjustments, and changes to work on, specifically, many images  are missing from the archive and category type pages, but I that will be corrected shortly.

If you click on the image above, you will see a screen shot with some red call-out boxes to point out some of the new features or features that may be in different places than you remember from the previous site.

If you have any feedback (good or bad) on the new design please leave a comment in the comments section below and I will do my best to address it as soon as possible.  You might also notice some changes over the weekend and the next few days, but I don’t expect to be offline again, and we will be back to the regular posting schedule starting Monday.  Thanks again for your patience and I look forward to any feedback that you have.

First, thanks for choosing OpenPotion Website Design to help you with this! Second, you might want to consider converting to the Disqus comment system.. it rocks, has nesting, and you can export your wordpress comments into it so there is nothing lost…

Looks fantastic Brian – nice job!

Very nice. I like the way you’ve categorized the site’s content.

I like this new layout! It’s very clean. =) I also really like how the content is now organized into categories – it makes for looking for specific reviews, or a specific category of reviews, much easier. One thing that I don’t really like though, is the blank space to the left of the right sidebar – it seems to disrupt the flow having the top portion left oriented and the bottom portion right oriented, but that just might be my computer/me being particular.

Wow I love Disqus… looks like you still need to import your previous comments.

I liked the old look but the new one is very good too. Looks clean and professional. I would make the drop-down menus animate a bit faster though.

Looks great! I like the professional look and especially the (assumed) emphasis on a speedy site.

I have to say I discovered this site just some days ago and when I was looking at the old layout, it was giving me a big headache anyways! Excellent content, but there was waay to much crap and advertisements and whatnot. It was hogging down my Google Chrome (objectively the fastest browser out there) like crazy. So I’m very relieved you fixed this for your own good! I think as an excellent expert in your niche you shouldn’t feel the need to rely on advertisement usually found on the typical marketing-only, non-value-adding websites. So I’m glad you put it so beautifully now.

For the OSG preview, maybe you might want to reduce the width of it, it doesn’t even properly fit on my 1920x screen width! Don’t know if you work with a 30″ Apple cinema display, but most of us have a maximum of Full-HD. ;) (Admittedly only on my laptop screen now, no external display used…)

Love your site and I’ve been following you by RSS for a long time. Your new layout looks great on my Mac, but I thought I should let you know that there are problems viewing the site with the Safari browser for iPhone. The home page is fine, and the index pages for the various categories and yearly archives are fine, but I can’t view individual articles. They start loading perfectly, but somewhere toward the end of the loading process a large white box completely blocks the main page content. Articles are okay with my iPhone RSS reader and Instapaper for iPhone, both of which eliminate the sidebar content. Just wanted to let you know.

Thanks for that feedback, I’ve been looking at a few tools that optimize the site for iPhone and other mobile platforms. Ill have to test them out though to see if I can replicate your issue, then fix it.

Yes, I actually have some additional work to do on speeding things up a bit, I think it can be better. I am lad to hear that the new layout is working better for you, I was never thrilled with the crammed look of the old site This design allows me to include the advertisements in a less intrusive way, which I really rely on in order to cover the expenses…just did my taxes the other day, and you might be surprised (I know I was) at how much it costs for all the giveaways alone.

Which preview were you talking about that takes up too much of the screen? I do the majority of the work for this site on a laptop, netbook, or in some cases my desktop with a 23″ monitor that I think is set at 1920 x 1080 resolution, but I never have issues with anything, even on the laptop and I’ve had people test for me on many different machines. Let me know so I can look into it though.

Thanks, about how long are the menus taking to animate for you? They seem very responsive here on my end, although I do have some things I need to do in order to improve the performance of the site.

Thank you, I’m glad you like it. I think you might have an Ad blocker, there is an advertising space there, so if you have anything that blocks it, or are behind a firewall that blocks ads, it will just show a white space.

Thank you. I’ve actually noticed through the stats for the site that people are visiting slightly more pages per visit, and spending a bit more time on the site as well, so it looks like people are finding it a little easier and more compelling to navigate around a bit.

Jason, thanks for all of your work on this, it was a pleasure working with you. I think I’ve worked through the few issues I had with the Disqus system now.
