Site Update — 27 May 2011
Suggestions, Tips, and Guest Blogging Spots

A few questions for all of you:

1. We are coming up on a long weekend, and I feel like it has been a VERY long time since I’ve asked for any product review suggestions, or tips on new products.  There are thousands of you, and just one of me, so collectively you all know and see a heck of a lot more than I ever could, plus I want to make sure I keep the site full of products you actually want to read about and see.  Let me know in the comments here if you have anything to share.

2. I’d love to hear any suggestions on the site content in general.  Too many giveaways, not enough?  Not enough reviews in a certain product category? Are the reviews too short, or too long?  Are there enough pictures, too many?  Any other areas of feedback are more than welcome too.  Again, just leave your feedback and comments below.

3. I know that there are a ton of pen, notebook, office supply, school supply, art supply, productivity, and other related and even semi-related bloggers out there who do great work, and I am admittedly kind of bad when it comes to spreading the love on social media, so I wanted to reach out to those of you who fit into that category and offer the opportunity to do a guest post. I am contemplating a regular once a month guest post program, so if you think you would be interested just send an email using the About/Contact tab and let me know so we can see if we can work something out.

4. The Newsletter and Monthly Giveaway is coming up on the one year anniversary so I wanted to get some feedback there as well.  Two things: 1) Any items you would want to see added/removed? 2) Would you rather see one more expensive prize, or keep the mix of multiple smaller prizes?

Also, not really a question, but a comment.  Some of you have been asking questions over on the OfficeSupplyGeek Facebook Page, which is GREAT because there really isn’t a good place here on the site here to ask random questions or questions not related to the post for that day.  Definitely feel free to leave any questions there, and if you see someone else asking something that you can help out with, feel free to chime in.

Thanks so much to everyone for all of your support, and I look forward to hearing your feedback!  Have a great weekend.

You can’t go wrong with the giveaways or the pictures!  I love that your reviews have so many pictures, it really gives a nice visual break to the blocks of text plus the multiple angles are useful in whatever you’re reviewing.  Maybe add an intro fountain pen to the giveaways?  There’s the Pilot Varsity of course, but Zebra now has one for cheap and I’ve been seeing the basic Sheaffers all around Office Max and even Barnes and Noble now.  Spread the obsession and all.  You also said you’d compare the Levenger Circa to the Staples Arc knockoff more, and I never saw that second post.  Maybe I missed it?

I don’t know about the stats on this site, but often giveaways are used by Bloggers to eat-up posts. Once-a-day posting takes work, more than most realize. Posting a giveaway uses up one day’s post, announcing the winner eats up yet another day’s post – so a six post per week Blog now turns into four days of actual content. Please don’t go there.

Please choose unique products. There are a lot of weird and interesting things out there, not just from your local office supply mega-store, but from online vendors too. Most of us don’t have the time and/or money to play with these things. Do it for us. Repeated reviews of almost identical stick pens gets old – fast.

    Thanks and Regards, David

Thanks for the feedback, that is a good point on the fountain pens for the giveaways.

Hi David, great feedback, thank you.  I always try to schedule the winning announcement for giveaways on my non standard post days.  I usually only post on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, so giveaway winners are announced on one of the other days there.  I’ve found that although giveaway posts are easier in the very short term (meaning day of post) they actually take up an equivalent amount of time when it comes to monitoring the entries to make sure people are following the rules, writing up the winning post, and then getting it off in the mail.  Essentially it is more of a time shifting exercise than a time saving exercise.  I’ve used giveaways in the past to do just that, like if an emergency came up and I didnt have other content ready to go, but then it does force me to play catch up later in the week on a day I’d usually not have a post to work on.  Just a little insight on how it works for me, I’m sure that other blogger do things differently though.

I hear you on the pens, so I will try to keep an eye on that.
