Uniball Signo UM151 Grey .38mm Review

Its been a while since I’ve reviewed a Uniball Signo DX (aka Uniball Signo UM151) but I recently saw that our sponsor JetPens had some new colors available so I grabbed a few.  One of the more interesting ones was this Uniball Signo UM151 in Grey (buy via JetPens). Thanks to JetPens btw for making this pen available free of charge as part of our partnership with them.

Uniball Signo UM151 Grey Cap and Grip

Nothing about the design of the Uniball Signo UM 151 Grey version has changed compared to prior versions.  It has the same branding and also the same simple but effective dimpled rubber grip.

One small thing I don’t like is the goldish yellow color used to print the .38mm tip size on the cap.  Maybe its because of how it looks with the grey background, but either way its a minor thing and obviously doesn’t impact the performance of the pen.

Uniball Signo UM151 Grey Tip

Somehow the tips on these .38mm Uniball Signo UM151 gel ink pens just seems to write super smoothly.  I’ve used micro tipped points like this before where they scracth and actually get paper fibers caught up in them, but the Signo seems to always avoid this annoying behavior.

Uniball Signo UM151 Grey Tip Writing Sample and Pen

Grey pens are kind of a rare situation, so thats one of the reasons I wanted to try this one out. I’ve used grey fountain pen ink before and liked the soft subtle color of it so that was part of the appeal.  As you can see in the picture above the color has a bit of a pencil look to it, but definitely a little more vibrant than just a dull pencil line.  That difference is a bit hard to pick up here in a straight photo, so I did a scan as well that you can see below.  As I mentioned before the ink flows and lays down on paper very smoothly, and in this case also dried VERY quickly at only about 1-2 seconds.  This will depend on the paper you use, but in my case I was using some bright white Clairefontaine 90 gsm paper.

The scan of the Uniball Signo UM151 Grey writing sample came out a bit more washed out than the true look, but still a little better than the regular photo.  The scribble test gives a somewhat better look at the grey color which will vary depending on the display on your computer anyway.  Although the scan above has some light spots there was really no skipping with the ink in this pen either.  The addition of a grey version of the Uniball Signo UM151 .38mm (buy via JetPens) is a much welcome addition to a line of great pens so I just wanted to share.  Thanks again to JetPens not only for the sponsorship and sample pen, but for making it so much easier to get great products like this!
