It seems like the cool new thing lately is metallic based pens and markers, so I’ve been on a streak of reviewing such things. Today we are looking at the Pilot Juice Metallic Gel Ink Pens that were provided to us for review from our friends at JetPens.
The Pilot Juice Metallic Gel Ink Pen that we are looking at here today have a .5mm tip, a nice spring loaded clip, and a translucent body that lets you see how you are doing on the ink level as you write. The clip itself also has a small hole on the top so that you can strap it on to a lanyard for convenience.
Before I get into the writing and performance and whats great about these pens, I want to quickly note the grip section. I was a bit surprised by the “vanilla” grip on these. I’m fine with a rubber grip, but its fairly smooth, and the small oval cutouts don’t seem to provide much extra traction, at least not for me. I would have liked to see something more grooved or raised to give a little extra traction on the grip here.
Surprisingly these pens write amazingly well on standard paper. The tips glide over the paper very smoothly, and there are no random splotches, streaks, or skips to be found anywhere. I guess the reason I find this surprising is because I picture the ink as having tiny flecks of sparkles in there which would seem like they would create some flow issues with ink, but thats definitely not the case here. These actually write more smoothly than a standard Pilot G2 Gel Ink pen in my opinion. In addition to the smooth and fantastic writing performance, these colors really jump out on the white paper, and have a great sparkly effect to them in addition to the vivid colors.
One of the suggested uses for the Pilot Juice Metallic Gel Ink Pens is for writing on dark paper, so I tried this 12″ x 18″ black construction paper as a test bed. While the inks performed very well, and show up nicely, it is a little bit hard to differentiate the actual colors on the dark paper. The thing that sticks out is the silvery metallic tone, but what gets lost is the actual color for the most part. You do see a slight hint of the actual color and the contrast of the silvery metallic flecks on the black paper definitely pops a bit.
Overall I’m definitely a big fan of how smooth the writing experience is with these, and how nicely the colors show up on regular white paper. They definitely make for a great option if you need to write on dark paper because the metallic flecks really jump out on the dark paper. Head on over to JetPens and get yourself a set of the Pilot Juice Metallic Gel Ink Pens if you have a need to write on something dark, or just want some ink that will really stand out. Thanks again to our friends at JetPens for providing this sample for us to test out.
