Levenger Nickel Disc Review

Close up of the Levenger Circa Nickel Discs.

I dont want to make a practice of doing office supply reviews on items that  are not currently available, however I am making an exception for this review because I love this product so much.  Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, Levenger is no longer making these Nickel Circa Discs, so my far fetched hope here is that this review gets so much attention and so many comments that Levenger decides they really need to start making these again…and this time in multiple sizes.

So these are just like your standard 3/4″ Levenger Circa discs, but instead of being made of plastic, they are brass underneath and nickel plated.  I’ve been looking at these for a while, in fact I mentioned that I wanted them in my original review on the Levenger Junior Size Circa Bomber Jacket Notebook back in December.

The picture above is from my original post on the Junior Size Circa Bomber Jacket when I was still using the original plastic rings that it came with.  I really liked the way the notebook looked at the time, and I still think it looks pretty nice.  When I got the new nickel discs I was very excited to try them out and see how they looked…I knew I would like how they looked, but I didnt think I would like them THIS much, I hope the following picture does them justice.

These discs were originally $26 from the Levenger website, but I was lucky enough to find some of the last once Levenger still had in stock by calling their store in Boca Raton Florida, at the suggestion of the great folks at the Levenger customer service center. Their customer service is truly one of the best that I’ve ever dealt with. Not only did they direct me to a place where I could get the discs, but they were also on sale, lucky me, only $22 instead of $26….but the tradeoff there is that they just arent making them any longer.

Something about the way this notebook looks with the nickel plated discs just really “classes it up” even more than it already was.  I think most of the Levenger products really look like something that you would only find a senior executive using, so to be able to say that this little addition made the notebook even more attractive says a lot.

I know that in the past Levenger had other metal discs, but I read reviews that said the pages didnt turn so well on them, which is absolutely not the case with these.  I have been using them for a few days now and they function just as well as their plastic coutnerparts.

Now that I am so enthralled with these nickel circa discs, it is really disappointing to know that they arent making them any longer…and even more disappointing that they never made them in other sizes because Id love to get these in a 1″ size so I could use them in my Letter Size Circa Bomber Jacket notebook to have a matching pair.  I know that the CEO of Levenger, Steve Leveen (@SteveLeveen on Twitter) is engaged with his customer base and likes to know that they think, so I am hoping that he and/or the @Levenger representative on Twitter somehow come across this post and have their product development or marketing folks look into possibly offering these again, and offering them in other sizes.

If you can get your hands on these either through a Levenger store, or on the Levenger eBay outlet, I am sure you will love them…just another example of the incredibly quality and style that you find in every Levenger product.

I’m with you on the nickel discs especially with the bomber jacket cover. Plastic just looks too tacky and cheap with the expensive, upscale leather binder. Hope Lev reconsiders.

OSG, you’re furthering my curiosity to buy a Circa for myself. I’m currently waiting to run out of space on my other 2nd-rate Mead Five star notebooks before I buy one, but I keep getting promo e-mails from Levenger and now your review that is pushing me to buy one. I have to know one thing : are the pages as easy to remove and insert as it looks? Do you end up having any problems with that? Also, I was thinking about buying the modest bookcloth Circas, but I do love leather. Is the quality of leather worth the upgrade?
By the way, I felt extremely validated yesterday when I got a customer on the phone who said they found goldspot through your Pelikan M215 review. Good job, sir!

Great review. I need to try out Circa. Do they still have the starter pack for forty dollars with a forty dollar coupon? Nr

@Inkophile – I am in complete agreement with you on that, thanks for stopping by and commenting.

@Tom – I would say the pages are very easy to add/remove unless you are tying to do more than say 15ish or so at a time. The biggest reason I didnt like the bookcloth version was because I had black and it collected dust like you would not believe, I assume other non dark colors wouldnt be as bad, but I do have to say Im a HUGE fan of the leather.

VERY happy to hear that my review helped to direct someone to your fine store, its nice to know that good people are getting business and shoppers will be spending money and getting good help/service while they do so….the economy needs all the help it can get. :)

@nrepose – Thanks! I just checked and they do still have the $40 starter kit with the $40 gift card:

I agree. It looks much better with the Nickel ones. I hope they make them again soon!

I remember seeing these and wanting them. Sad that they aren’t around anymore! I agree that Levenger has amazing customer service. I’ve had several problems sorted out by them and it was a good experience. Hope Levenger reconsiders!

@BethKnowles – I always knew you had good taste. ;)

@Lady Glamis – Thanks for the feedback, I think that Levenger’s customer service is one of the things that makes their products worth that little bit of extra money.

If anyone has any extras of these discs I would love to buy them from you. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find them. Just email me at taylormattjunk [at] yahoo [dot] com . I’ve called Levenger and tried to special order, I’ve tried corporate sales, called every Levenger store, tried to special order through Rollabind, tried even to find a Myndology or Atoma equivalent, I’ve searched pricegrabber, google, froogle, craigslist, and ebay, and still nothing. Hopefully, someone out there has some extras or doesn’t like them, and would be willing to part with 11 of the rings. -Thanks, Matt

Yes, we discontinued the silver Circa discs because we had many people return them, complaining that it was too difficult to turn the pages around the discs. Apparently the silvertone paint made them thick. However, if you folks tell the Levenger Customer Service that you want us to bring them back, then it will probably happen if there are enough adamant requests! (800) 544-0880

    Take care! :)

Thanks Levenger! Shortly after I commented (@1:51am), I emailed Steve Leveen and asked for any extras. His assist. called the next day and had them in the mail immediately – along with a personalized note from Steve. GREAT customer service, thank you Levenger and Steve for my nickel discs and a great product. -Matt

@matt – That is awesome. I am so glad to hear that you finally got the discs. I’ve said it before and this only goes to further strengthen the fact that Levenger has some of the best customer service out there, and from the CEO to the good people that answer the phones at the customer service lines, they really do care about and want to take care of their customers.

Thanks for sharing the update with us. And Mr. Leveen, if you are reading this, thanks for leading by example with your fantastic customer service!

Thanks in large part to you folks, the Circa discs are now available again in silver in all sizes. Enjoy!

    Take care! :)

I find paper catches on the silver discs because they are painted. I am crossing my fingers that one day the nickel will return, even if only as a limited edition type thing. It is easier to justify the big expense of metal rings over the big expense of the kyoto which are just plastic though beautiful.

  • matt

    @kris,

I totally agree. Those Nickel discs are incredible. I bought the silver as well and noticed the same scratches you did. They really don’t compare to the nickel discs.

  • http://www.officesupplygeek.com OfficeSupplyGeek

@Kris and @Matt – I’ve never used the silver discs, but I’ve heard that feedback before unfortunately. The nickle plated ones really are fantastic.

Eureka! I found some on eBay but they were not mentioned. I thought I spotted metal discs in the photo of a shrink-wrapped Levenger Compact size Circa notebook in an auction and inquired. The seller advised that the discs were plastic. BUT … the seller kindly added that there might be some metal discs in the closet. Got ‘em! Two tubesful of 3/4″ barcoded 000000090756 labeled ADS3585 CIRCA NICKELS [sic] DISCS (SET OF 11) with another tiny number 081205. The Levenger serifed “L” is in the middle of both sides of each disc. My little treasure.

  • http://www.officesupplygeek.com OfficeSupplyGeek

@Claire – Thats awesome, congratulations! I’m jealous…but good for you for keeping an eye out on eBay!

  • Kris

Did you see the new aluminum rings they just released? I’m intrigued but a little disappointed, they cost the same as the previous nickel ones but don’t have the lovely L ingraved in them and they are suppose to be very lightweight. Aluminum has a tendency to dent quite easily, I hope that is not the case with this rings . . .

Thanks in large part to all of your feedback here at OfficeSupplyGeek.com, we at Levenger have brought back the unpainted silvertone Circa discs! And because we’ve had so much feedback about the pages not turning very easily (especially around the painted versions), we’ve made them out of lightweight aluminum. If you buy them and have *any* issues whatsoever (such as the denting fear Kris mentioned above), Levenger will happily refund your money. Thanks again, folks! :)

@Kris – Yes! And I’m very excited about them, I just need to go through my other Levenger supplies to see what else I need to pick up when I order these. Seems like every time I order from them I find myself realizing a day or two later that I should have ordered something else too. Hopefully I’ll order some this weekend and I will be sure to post a new review.

@Levenger – Thanks so much for keeping us all informed here, and for taking customer feedback into consideration, thats what makes you guys so great, and why your customer service is something that all other companies should strive to match.
