Giveaway — 13 August 2010

Our friends over at OfficeMax have been kind enough to offer up another $100 gift card just in time for back to school season! You will have 4 chances to enter and win this $100 OfficeMax gift card, so read below for the official rules, and please keep in mind that this contest is open to US residents only.

Before we get to the contest rules though, I wanted to share a quick tip that I learned from a recent study that OfficeMax conducted about back to school shopping for parents this season.  In the study, they discuss different aspects of when people like to start shopping for school supplies, and what thought process is behind the purchase decisions, but my favorite part was the part that looked at who was spending what on school supplies.  They discovered that on average parents will spend $126 on school supplies this year, but here comes the tip…when they drilled deeper into that statistic, they found that on average, Moms expect to spend $102, while Dads expect to spend an average of $152 on school supplies.  So to all of you kids out there, definitely see if you can get Dad to head down to OfficeMax with you when its time to pick up those school supplies.

So now for the reason you are all here, the $100 OfficeMax gift card.  There will be one winner, but you will have the chance to enter up to 4 times as follows:

1. Your first entry needs to be a comment that tells us what your favorite “must have” back to school supply is, or was.

2. You can get a second entry by heading over to the OfficeMax Facebook page and clicking on the “Like” button, and then just come back and leave a new comment here letting us know the name that matches to your Facebook account.

3. Your 3rd entry comes if you sign up for the OfficeSupplyGeek.com newsletter, and leave a new comment here telling us you did so.  If you have signed up already already, you can still leave a new comment here, and Ill just check it up against the mailing list.

4. For your 4th and final entry, retweet the text below on Twitter, and come back here to post a new comment with the link to that status update from Twitter.  To get the direct link to the status update, just click on the date/time below your tweet.  here is the text to retweet, minus the quotes:

“Enter to win a $100 gift card from @officemax and @officesupplygee http://bit.ly/bMBMbg  #BackToSchool #giveaway”

All comments must be left by 11:59 PM Eastern time on Friday, August 20th, and again,  you must be a US resident to enter and win.  The winner of the $100 OfficeMax gift card will be selected from the comments by random number generator and announced on Saturday, August 21st.

Good Luck!

While in school, the best supplies were always
    - A good, multi-subject notebook with pockets separating the subjects (even better if the pockets had a diagonal cut to them instead of straight pocket — easier to get papers in and out.)
    - A mechanical pencil that would easily clip into the spiral biding of the notebook (would need spares, of course)

Today, it’s a good 8.5X11 BnR notebook. Nothing better for a notebook laying flat and having good, quality paper!

My favorite back-to-school item when I was in elementary school were Blue Horse pads and filler paper, because you could collect the coupons and get prizes. I grew up in Alabama, and according to the little history at the link below, these were made by an Atlanta company, so it may have been mostly a Southern thing.

Right before the school year started I loved getting a new notebook, pens, and pencils. I had everything ready to go in my backpack. I would always arrange and rearrange where the paper in my 3-ring binder was to go and sharpened all my pencils perfectly.

When I was in school [70s & 80s] I always bought a small memo pad to keep track of assignments in an ad-hoc way. I also was always on the quest for good pens, but all that was available it seems were ball-points. Gel had not yet been invented, and liquid rollers were not that good yet or were too expensive. The quest continues but now the problem is too many choices rather than too few.

My favorite back to school supply was, and is, a new spiral-bound, college-ruled notebook, with pockets…although I coveted the Trapper Keeper in elementary school. This is so ingrained that when I was accepted to my graduate program, my first thought was “I need a new notebook.”

Naturally, if one has a new notebook, one must also need new pens in various colors.

Being the owner of a site by Nerds, for Nerds and About Nerdy things, you would think I would go with the stereotypical pocket protector, but in actuality, my favorite supply item was and still is a good planner. That little paper tool helped me stay on track with my assignments, school trips and events, dates/get togethers, and – yes this may be nerdy – comic book and genre movie release dates.

After having so many electronic planners and “intelligent” phones just blow up and erase all my info over the years, I still use a paper planner to keep track of my life. I just buy one small enough to fit in my wallet now.

Technology is cool, but sometimes excessive.

By the way – I love your site. Cool stuff.
