Spill Proof – Leak Proof Travel Mug: the Contigo Autoseal West Loop
AUTOSEAL® West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug (Vacuum Insulated) Both

The Contigo AUTOSEAL® West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug

Some of you might not consider these Contigo Travel Mugs to actually be “office supplies” but considering how awesome they are, I felt like I had to share them here with you.  I figure if you go into work every day and have a cup of tea or coffee, then these spill proof and leak proof travel mugs are definitely worthy of reviewing on this blog.

One of the obvious things about these leak-proof travel mugs that makes them so cool is that they look absolutely awesome with their sleek design, and bright bold colors, however there is more to it than that.  Pictured above  are the black and blue versions, but you can also get them in silver, green, red, and purple.  The REALLY cool thing about these 16 oz. leak proof travel mugs made from stainless steel are that they are 100% spill proof and leak proof and they can keep hot stuff hot for up to 4 hours, and cold stuff cool for up to 12 hours because of their double walled construction.  I’ve been using my Contigo travel mug for a few weeks now, and I am still amazed every time I complete my 40ish minute trip to work that my hot tea doesnt seem to have lost even one degree of its nearly boiling hot temperature.

You might wonder how this travel mug manages to be spill proof and keep the temperature of its contents so well controlled, so let me see if I can adequately explain.  The photo you see of the lid above shows the small vacuum sealed opening at the top which is released when you push the rectangular button on the front of the travel mug.  The vacuum sealed lip helps control some of the temperature, but the most important feature in keeping your beverage hot or cold is the stainless steel double walled body of the travel mug.  I’ve done my best to test this spill proof travel mug by tipping it  over, knocking it down, shaking it, and holding it upside down to no avail…not one drop of the liquid inside has ever found its way out.  What I should make clear too is that because of the tapered design of the body and the rubber grip on the lid, there is not much of a chance that you would ever spill your travel mug anyway.  With the push of a button my steaming hot tea is readily available, but never makes an unscheduled and unwelcome appearance.  My only very minor beef with this travel mug is that with a hot beverage, the top rubber grip part that goes around the lid comes in direct contact with the contents inside, and can become very hot to the touch, while the rest of the body always remains cool.

I cant say enough good things about this leak proof and spill proof travel mug, from Contigo, as it is just so well constructed and manages to provide functionality that until now has been promised frequently but almost never accomplished.  You should definitely make it a point to pick one of these up from Amazon because once you get used to having a piping hot or ice cold beverage within reach from your morning commute through to your lunch break you will wonder how you ever lived without having such an option.

Oh, the Contigo travel mug. These things are AMAZING! A friend told me about them a few months ago and I picked one up soon after I heard about them. They’re sold at Target as well. I make coffee or tea at home and bring it to work and it’s so reassuring to know it won’t spill AND will still be hot long after I get to work.

    love it!

also a good reminder for me to get another one! and gift some as Christmas gifts.

These are fantastic! I have had mine for 3 years now and it has not leaked once. Plus, it keeps my coffee hot for several hours. I accidentally dropped it once on cement and while it is dented on one side it didn’t pop open and still doesn’t leak.

I love my Contigo’s. I was a big fan of the previous design, which worked equally well but held up less well to wear and tear, so I was delighted when they switched to the current design. They are so much better than any other travel mug I’ve tried it’s actually kind of funny.

The price point puts people off sometimes, at near $20 per mug, so if you have a membership, I suggest looking for them at Costco, where they sell in 2-packs for about $20, pretty much half price. Well worth it.

PS – As a bonus, with the lid removed, they’re _just_ short enough to fit in a Keurig Coffee Maker. It’s a very specialized benefit, but if you use a Keurig, it’s a big plus.

Key question – can they be opened, drunk from, and closed all one-handed?

  • Marco Ramirez

Ohh I love these! I use one everyday, just toss it in the side of my backpack and have hot coffee for hours. Matt P: yes! You can use this all in one hand. I bought ours from Costco, you get two for under $20!

@jumblygiant – Didn’t know they had these at Target as well, definitely a great idea for a gift!

@imgovtdrone – Thanks for the comment, it makes me happy to hear that you have had yours for so long, and that its lived through a little bit of a scuff-up. :)

@Rob Donoghue – Wow, half price? That IS a good deal! Also good to know that it works out well in the coffee maker, I’m sure that will be helpful info for lots of people so thanks for sharing.

@Matt P – As Marco stated, you can do it all with one hand. Just push in the rectangular button on the front with your thumb and it unseals the top for you to drink from, then you just let go and it seals back up! Very convenient and easy to use.

@Marco Ramirez – The key word there is “toss” its amazing that you can jostle these around like that and not have to worry about even one drop spilling…although I guess you should just be careful that you dont hit or lay it down directly on the button with a lot of pressure or it could open the seal.

@dowdyism – Theya re pretty awesome, I almost want to grab a few more in different colors too now.

I own a pair of Contigo’s that I purchased at Costco. I am also a big fan. I wanted the auto-seal feature because I own a small aircraft – cup holders are nonexistent. I can take coffee in the Contigo and fly for hours – still have hot coffee when I land. Not only that, but I have had the cup tip or lay on it’s side while flying and have never had a problem with it spilling.

Seconded, Thirded, etc. Love these mugs.

@Stephanie – I’m picturing you doing all kinds of high speed maneuvers like in Top Gun, but I’m going to assume your “small aircraft” is not an F-14? :) Pretty cool to know that even in a plane though the Contigo travel mugs work well…thanks for sharing that very unique perspective.

@Kim – Yeah, I’m quickly learning that just about everyone loves these things.
