The Fellowes PS-77Cs Cross-Cut Shredder

A few weeks ago I undertook a serious cleaning project to purge some of my older files, and I gave my paper shredder a pretty good workout.  Unfortunately the paper shredder that was already about 6 years old decided that it was time to call it quits, leaving me with stacks of stuff to shred still.  Lucky for me I recently signed up for Amazon Prime (2 day shipping on everything for $75/yr.) and I quickly ordered myself a new Fellowes Powershred PS-77Cs Shredder.

The Fellowes Powershred PS-77CS is a serious paper shredder, and has some really great features, most of which can be seen in the photo above.  The silver bar that you see there serves a dual purpose,  it acts as a slot to safely feed CDs and credit cards through and it also acts as a safety that automatically stops the shredder from operating should your fingers or any body part come in contact with it.  Below that you can see a black oval shape that has a notch in it, the notch is basically your way to measure the maximum thickness (about 12 sheets depending on the weight of the paper) that the shredder can handle.  There will be videos of some of these features in action later on in the review.  To your right you see the large rocker switch that is basically your forward, neutral, and reverse switch.

Two other things you see in the back of this Fellowes paper shredder are the main power switch there at the top, and the handle just below to help hold onto this pretty hefty shredder.

Back to the front of this Fellowes paper shredder you can see the large capacity waste bin, at 7 gallons.  Not only is it a nice large capacity, but it is also much more convenient to empty than my previous shredder.  The bin slides out while the frame of the unit holds up the heaviest top part of the shredder, my previous model (not a Fellowes) required you to lift the heavy top off and find somewhere to place it while emptying the bin.  Also the fact that the waste bin is completely sealed, and not a metal mesh like some others, helps to contain much of the fine paper dust created when shredding.

As promised here is the video of the cool feature that stops the shredder from potentially mangling your extremities.  As you watch the video, you can see how the shredder instantly stops as soon as my fingers touch the silver safety bar.  It really is impressive how quickly this thing goes from mean and hungry paper shredding monster to stopping on a dime.

Now this next video is one you might want to have your sound on for because although this paper shredder is pretty quiet when shredding papers as you could hear in the previous video, I just dont think there is a quiet way to shred a CD.  Turn up that volume and watch what this machine does to a CD.  Also, in this video you can notice the clear plastic window on the front of the waste bin to give ou an idea when its getting close to needing to be emptied.

Although I’ve only owned this Fellowes Paper Shredder for a few weeks now, I feel like I’ve put it through its paces having easily shredded (cross-cut at 5/32 x 1 1/2″ ) around 500 pages of documents with staples, and paper clips, some random credit card like items, and a hand-full of CDs.  Being a fairly hefty machine, you will want to find a good location for this in your office so you are not constantly moving it around.  Once situated, I’m sure this high quality machine will be a fixture in your office for years to come.  If a new paper shredder is in your future, I don’t think you can go wrong with the   Fellowes Powershred PS-77Cs Shredder.
