Doane Paper Fountain Pen Test
Posted by: | CommentsOver on The Fountain Pen Network I posted something about Doane Paper, and someone was asking how fountain pen friendly the paper was, so I told them I would do some quick writing samples and tests of my fountain pens on it. The above photo shows a mix of the different fountain pens and fountain pen inks on the Doane Paper. The pen and inks used are as follows:
- Platinum Preppy with Blue Black Ink
- Lamy Safari with Noodler’s Tiananmen ink, EF nib
- Pelikan M205 with Noodler’s Bulletproof Black Ink, F nib
- Lamy Studio with Private Reserve Black Velvet, EF nib
- Pelikan M215 Private Reserve Black Velvet, F nib
- Pelikan M215 with Noodler’s Luxury Blue, F nib
- Lamy Studio with J. Herbin Vert Empire, EF nib
- Lamy Safari with J. Herbin Orange Indien, EF nib
If you look at the larger picture you can clearly see that there is virtually no feathering at all with any of the fountain pens or inks on the Doane Paper. The next thing to look at is the drying time of the various fountain pen inks on this paper. You can see that majority of the inks dont dry instantly on the Doane Paper, but there are a few inks that seem to do significantly better than the others, especially the J. Herbin inks, and the Noodlers Luxury Blue. Personally I dont really think that any of the inks are bad on thedoane paper in terms of drying time, because I dont usually try to smudge what I’ve just written. If you write with your left hand though, this might be an issue.
I know that often people are concerned with bleed through on fountain paper, but on the Doane Paper Writing Pad, because of its unique design, Im not sure that it even matters because I assume that most people dont use the back of these. I did look at a few writing samples that I had done in one of the Doane Paper utility notebooks which have the design on the back of the paper as well, and there was absolutely NO bleed through with the few samples I did there.
Hope this was helpful, but if you have any other questions or requests regarding any pens on the Doane Paper feel free to leave a comment and I would be happy to try and answer.

Students damaged psychologically by pens!
Posted by: | CommentsAfter reading that article, I think it is my duty to post some of my favorite red pens with a quick pen review or writing sample so that red pens around the world can have their voices heard, and not be discriminated against. All of the red pens in the writing sample above (click the picture for a better view) have been very good to me, and I love using each and every one of them…I cant imagine one ever hurting a child.
Obviously the Sharpie is great for writing on just about anything, and doing so with authority and permanence.
The Sanford Liquid Expresso is a pen I’ve always enjoyed writing with, it just writes so smoothly that its fun to just pick up and doodle with just so I have an excuse to write with it.
The Bic Z4 I used as an every day pen in school to go back and underline or flag really important parts in my notes.
My Uniball Vision Exact has always been a pen I relied on when it came to color coding things like my calendar or project plans. I love the green version of this pen for that same purpose.
You might be able to tell from the picture, but the Pilot Precise V5 is a pen that I have had for years. The very fine and firm point make it great for exacting work. I remember using it in school when I had to make maps or charts.
Both of my Uniball Signo pens (the .28 and .18) are fairly new, however I have already grown quite attached to them. My main use for these pens is to go back into my notes or to-do lists for work so I can make small follow up notes. For example, if I have a “To Do” item to call someone back, I can use the super fine writing point of either of these pens to jot down the date and time I called the person back in any small space or margin that is left.
Well, that is my quick summary of my favorite red pens, hopefully people come to their senses and realize that banning red pens will not solve any problems. I think the focus should be on making fewer mistakes, learning to take constructive criticism, and understanding that we all make mistakes and need to learn from them.
On a side note, you will notice that I did the writing sample above on my Doane Paper writing pad which you might remember from my Doane Paper review. I wanted to point this out because I just realized today that I never put a link to the Doane Paper website on my “Buy Stuff” links over there —> so that people had an easy way to check out the site. Chad Doane the creator of Doane Paper runs a good business with great customer service, so I am a little bummed that I forgot to add him over there sooner.
Doane Paper Review
Posted by: | CommentsThe first time I saw any of the doane paper products was when I started reading the great pen reviews over at the pen addict site where it was being used as a the standard paper for all of the writing samples. The unique design of the graph paper + standard ruled lines jumped out as being a pretty good idea to me, and I was able to think of a few instances in past jobs where it would have really come in handy. They offer two options for their paper, one is an 8.25″ x 11.75″ writing pad with 50 sheets of 20lb stock writing paper, and the other is the 3.5″ x 5.5″ 48 page notebook composed of 80lb text stock. Both notebooks have the same grid + ruled line layout with a grid size of .125” (.3175 cm) x .125” (.3175 cm). Each of the options come in packs of 3, and the cost is $9.95 for a pack of writing pads, and $9.50 for a pack of notebooks, plus any shipping and handling charges.
I have been trying both the writing pad and the notebook with various types of pens and ink, and I was happy to see how well the paper handles. I have used the uni-ball UBR-300 .5mm gel refill, the uni-ball signo bit .18mm pens, and a Lamy Studio with an extra fine nib and Noodler’s Tiananmen and Noodler’s Borealis Black inks. So far each of these has performed very nicely on the doane paper pads with no feathering, or bleed-through, and they seem to dry quickly also. Read More→
